Felting landscapes workshop, 2 day workshop

Relax, unwind and create… On this relaxed two day felting landscapes workshop you will be taught how to wet felt (on day 1) and needle felt (on day 2) to create your own wet felted landscape. It’s perfect for beginners!

Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th February 2025.

10am – 3.30pm
£160 (£80 per day)
Clifford Village Hall, Albion St, Clifford, Wetherby LS23 6HY

Clifford Village is next to Boston Spa approx 25 mins drive from Harrogate, York and Leeds with a free car park.

Images of landscapes to work from will be provided, however I’d love you to bring your own too. Is there a special landscape you’d like to create, somewhere you have been on holiday or as a child? Ideally this should be mainly landscape (ideally: no buildings, animals or people) and I’ll take you through step by step how to transform it into felt. Feel free to bring as many images as you like and I can help you choose the right one for the day.

Felting landscapes workshop day 1 – wet felting

You will learn the wet felting technique, this involves laying out the dry loose merino wool to create your wet felted landscape. At the end we add warm soapy water and friction to make it turn into a solid piece of felt. I still find it magical today and love this process. If you struggle with the final part of the process (rolling the wool to get it to matt together) I will be on hand to help you every step of the way – so just let me know you need help. You will take home your wet felted landscape to dry and bring back on Sunday.

Felting landscapes workshop day 2 – needle felting

You will learn how to needle felt into your – now dry – wet felted landscape to add more details. You can decide on the day if you would also like to hand sew into it, add some beads or some simple hand embroidery – to further enhance your wet felted landscape. We work sat down on day 2.

NOTE | Needle felting is not sewing. Needle felting is using a special barbed needle that you stab small pieces of wool into the wet felted landscape to add more details than you can at the wet felting stage. It is easy to do and also very therapeutic stabbing into the wool – as long as you miss your fingers 😉

Each day will be 5 and a half hours long and includes:

  • All equipment
  • Merino wool
  • Landscape pictures (if you don’t have your own)
  • Beads and threads
  • Drinks (see details below*)

You will need to bring:

  • A small towel (to take your artwork home in on day 1)
  • comfortable shoes – you may wish to work standing up on day 1 (your choice)
  • layers of clothing you can take off / put on so you are a comfortable temperature
  • a packed lunch each day
  • In terms of what landscape pictures to bring:-
      • Choose a landscape that you find interesting and feel excited to recreate.
      • Choose a familiar landscape if possible i.e. one you have visited. It will help if you have memories of the landscape as well as a photo.
      • Choose a landscape ideally without buildings in / or not many buildings.
      • Choose one ideally without people/ animals in too. Although on the day you can just not add in the people/animals/ buildings if they are in the landscape.
      • Feel free to bring a different sky image to use if the sky on the landscape picture isn’t the best and you want a different sky!
I will often choose a photo then decide what elements to add in / leave out. For example if there’s a fence in it I will choose to either add it in if I feel it adds to the overall picture or I may choose NOT to put it in at all if I feel it’s in the way.
So on the day you are welcome to bring a few photos and I am happy to help you choose the best one to use. I will also bring a selection of landscapes to choose from if you don’t have your own.

* The workshops take place in Clifford Village Hall – meeting room. It’s a lovely big room with access to a large kitchen and toilets. You gain entrance to it via the front door. I will bring tea, coffee, milk and biscuits that you can help yourself to during the day. You will need to bring a packed lunch each day.

The village hall also has on site free parking.
