The Inspiration for this Yorkshire landscape art

On a warm summer’s day we walked along the Cleveland Way to Sutton Bank, where one of England’s most breathtaking views opened up before us. Looking across the Yorkshire countryside, the patchwork of farmers’ fields stretched towards the horizon, divided by traditional drystone walls that have shaped this landscape for centuries.

The colourful meadow flowers in the foreground added little splashes of colour to the scene, while the vast open landscape created a wonderful feeling of peace, freedom and space. It’s easy to understand why Sutton Bank is proudly known as “The Best View in England.”

Whether you’re visiting for a leisurely walk, a challenging cycle ride or simply to admire the scenery, Sutton Bank is a place that stays with you long after you’ve left.

The nearby Sutton Bank National Park Visitor Centre is the perfect place to begin your visit, with walking trails, cycling routes, a welcoming café and a children’s play area nestled amongst the trees.

A little poem to go with it – Sutton Bank

“The Best View in England” was the sign,
It certainly was divine.
Farmers’ fields, like a patchwork quilt,
With drystone walls so finely built.

The view stretched as far as the eye could see,
That feeling of being wild and free.
Meadow flowers, little pops of colour,
Make the scene complete each summer.

Yorkshire’s countryside at its best,
Summer’s colours at their finest.
A great panoramic view to admire,
Lifting the soul and spirits higher.

My Creative Process

Drawing on my degree in Fine Art, I create a charcoal and chalk drawing of the landscape first. I love drawing with charcoal and concentrate on the composition without worrying about the colour at this point. I may make several charcoal versions until I am happy with the composition.

When I am happy with the charcoal landscape I create an oil pastel painting of the same landscape in colour. I do love colour and like to use lots of it. I also love my oil pastels and use them a bit like paint, I can push the pigment around with my fingers during the creation process to create a ‘painterly’ feel to the piece.
