Irish boat painting, an original Irish oil pastel painting of Galway Hooker boats in the harbour at Kinvara, Ireland, with their red sails shining across the evening sea. Inspired by the Wild Atlantic Way, by Yorkshire landscape artist Janine Jacques.
MEDIUM: Original oil pastel painting
STYLE: Irish seascape and boat art
LOCATION: Kinvara, County Galway, Ireland
SUBJECT: Galway Hooker boats with their distinctive red sails
As we watched the sun set, our day was coming to an end. The kids were in bed, and it was our time to relax.
The boats gently sailed across the water for the final time before nightfall, their red sails gleaming in the fading sunlight. As dusk settled in and the sun disappeared, the moon took up its position to light up the night sky.
Kinvara, on the Wild Atlantic Way, is a harbour village in County Galway, Ireland.
Kinvara hosts the Cruinniú na mBád festival, celebrating the traditional Galway Hooker boats with their beautiful red sails. We were very lucky to be in Kinvara during the festival a few years ago. Our apartment overlooked the harbour, giving us a fantastic view of the Galway Hooker boat races.
With dark and stormy skies above,
The boats with the red sails, so loved.
Watched by those upon the shore,
Racing as someone keeps the score.
Tree bark and butter, mixed with care,
Create the bright red sails so rare.
Weatherproofing at its best,
A treasured heritage to be blessed.
These Irish boats, through all the years,
Come together to be cheered.
Once a year, a celebration and a race,
These Galway Hookers show such grace.

Drawing on my Fine Art degree, I create a charcoal drawing of the landscape first. I love drawing with charcoal and concentrate on the composition before introducing colour.
When I am happy with the composition, I create an oil pastel painting of the same scene in colour. I love working with oil pastels and use them a bit like paint, pushing the pigment around with my fingers during the creation process to create a more painterly feel to the piece.
This original oil pastel painting would make a beautiful and unique gift for someone who loves Ireland, Galway, traditional Irish boats or the Wild Atlantic Way. It could make a special birthday, wedding, Christmas or anniversary gift, or simply be a lovely piece to buy for yourself.
