Felt Art by Janine Jacques: Yorkshire-based landscape artist.
Hi, I’m Janine Jacques, a Yorkshire-based felt artist living between Leeds and York. My passion lies in creating felt art that captures the beauty and magic of nature. I’m thrilled to share that I was recently featured in The Yorkshire Post Magazine on April 20th, 2024, and in Towpath Talk in September 2024. Both articles highlight my current felt art exhibition with the International Felt Makers Association at Armley Mills in Leeds.
I bring the great outdoors into your home through my colourful landscape paintings. My felt art evokes memories of cherished landscapes you have visited, special times in the countryside: feelings of space, freedom, calm, and truly being alive in the natural world.
Each felt landscape captures the beauty of nature in a tactile form, bringing landscape painting to life in a unique, environmentally conscious, sustainable way.
Felt art Inspiration
Like many I love being out in the countryside and find it very inspiring – taking in the sights, sounds, smells, colours, sky and weather.
I use wool as my main medium as I love the soft textures it creates when it shrinks down to create the felt art. But by incorporating material and other ‘tops’ with the wool I can create even more texture. I love the way the material crinkles up as it shrinks and I often use it to represent part of the sky, a sandy beach, tree bark or to just add a little sparkle for example.
Wool is a beautiful, organic, eco friendly material and so versatile in its uses which makes the possibilities endless.

Creation of the felt art
Using photos and my memories of the landscapes I have visited I create a mood board of photos to work from. Drawing on my degree in Fine Art, I create a charcoal sketch first, then an oil pastel painting. I use both of these to create the felt art using the wet felting method. At the end I needle felt into the artwork and finish with hand sewn embroidery. To read more about the process click here.
The final felt art
The final felt art pieces are truly unique and not simply a recording of the scene. Each felt landscape incorporates painterly mark-making and is a celebration of colour, the beauty of wool and nature.
Each felt artwork combines my training in painting with the ancient art of felt-making to celebrate and bring together the different skills of wet felting, needle felting and sewing.
My felt art can be found in art gallery shops in the UK and has been bought by private collectors worldwide.
