Northumberland seascape painting – an original Northumbrian oil pastel painting of a beautiful coastal view looking towards Bamburgh Castle from Holy Island, Lindisfarne, Northumberland. By Yorkshire landscape artist Janine Jacques.
MEDIUM: Original oil pastel painting
STYLE: Northumbrian seascape art
LOCATION: Holy Island, Northumberland
SUBJECT: Coastal view towards Bamburgh Castle from Holy Island
We crossed the causeway to visit Holy Island. Excited to be there, we wandered around in the beautiful sunshine, seeing all the sights the island had to offer.
At the Lookout Tower we saw this view, looking over the water towards Bamburgh Castle. The sea was so calm, with the sand dunes just visible above the water.
I called the painting ‘Blue For You’ because of the beautiful blue tones that dominate the scene. As a family, we love Northumberland and look forward to revisiting one day.
Holy Island to Bamburgh
Holy Island is the place to be,
At times it’s totally surrounded by sea.
The causeway timings are so vital,
To be sure of your arrival.
Looking across the sea to shore,
Bamburgh Castle stands proud once more.
An iconic scene, visible from all around,
This Northumbrian landmark, majestic, renowned.
The sea was so flat, calm and blue,
With sand dunes visible above the water too.
A beautiful Northumbrian scene,
A place to revisit – always keen.

Drawing on my Fine Art degree, I create a charcoal drawing of the landscape first. I love drawing with charcoal and concentrate on the composition before introducing colour.
When I am happy with the composition, I create an oil pastel painting of the same scene in colour. I love working with oil pastels and use them a bit like paint, pushing the pigment around with my fingers during the creation process to create a more painterly feel to the piece.
This original oil pastel painting would make a beautiful and unique gift for someone who loves Northumberland, the coast, Holy Island or Bamburgh Castle. It could make a special birthday, wedding, Christmas or anniversary gift, or simply be a lovely piece to buy for yourself.
