The Inspiration for My Northumbrian Painting

It was a cool August day in Northumberland. We packed our lunch and drove to Dunstanburgh Golf Club and parked on the roadside just before you get to the club. These parking spaces are limited, so it’s worth getting there as early as possible.

We made our way across the sand dunes and walked onto the beach. What an amazing view you get of Dunstanburgh Castle. It’s an absolutely stunning beach and landscape. It really does take your breath away and make you feel alive.

I walked barefoot along the shoreline towards the castle for a closer look. Other people were there walking dogs and flying kites on the beach. My kids and husband were bodyboarding in the sea, trying to catch the perfect wave. These days and memories are always so special.

A little poem to go with the artwork

In Northumberland on a cool August day
Dunstanburgh Castle took my breath away
We crossed the dunes to the beach
The perfect wave within our reach.
I walked barefoot along the shore
The view of the castle was such a draw
Dogs running and having a ball
Kites flying high until they fall.
The ancient castle ruins so iconic
An amazing view that’s such a tonic
Steeped in history – the coast’s defender
Since 1313, built by the Earl of Lancaster.

Framing Northumbrian Painting

I can arrange for the oil pastel artwork to be framed (UK only) and posted out to you. Please see the framing option below. Framing times will vary depending on how busy my framer is at the time.

The Process

Drawing on my degree in Fine Art, I create a charcoal drawing of the landscape first, followed by a colourful oil pastel painting of the scene. I use these as references when developing the final artwork.

I love working with oil pastels and use them a bit like paint, pushing the pigment around with my fingers during the creation process to create a more painterly feel to the piece.
