Roseberry Topping painting, an original oil pastel painting of Roseberry Topping viewed from Captain Cook’s Monument, surrounded by the vibrant purple heather of the Yorkshire Moors. By Yorkshire landscape artist Janine Jacques.
MEDIUM: Original oil pastel painting
STYLE: Yorkshire landscape art
LOCATION: Roseberry Topping, North Yorkshire
SUBJECT: Roseberry Topping and the Yorkshire Moors in summer
We have a deep affection for the Yorkshire Moors and Roseberry Topping, and after seeing its winter beauty, I was eager to see it in summer with the blooming heather. The hills surrounding Roseberry Topping are abundant with heather from mid-July to September, transforming the landscape into a beautiful sight.
Our journey began at Captain Cook’s Monument car park, where we walked up the gentle climb to the monument at the top. Unlike clambering up Roseberry Topping itself, this walk offers a more manageable route, taking us about 45 minutes. At the top, we enjoyed our picnic before venturing out to explore the surrounding walking trails.
The view from Captain Cook’s Monument overlooking Roseberry Topping is truly mesmerising, regardless of the season. However, it becomes exceptionally magical when the heather is in full bloom.
Hiking up to the peak,
A monumental sight to seek.
A picnic sheltered from the gust,
The view of Roseberry is a must.
Hot and windy, a summer’s day,
This scene in my mind will always stay.
Panoramic views from way up there,
A majestic place, I do declare.
Roseberry Topping, a small mountain,
A Yorkshire beauty to enlighten.
Can be seen from miles away,
An iconic scene that’s here to stay.

Drawing on my degree in Fine Art, I create a charcoal and chalk drawing of the landscape first. I love drawing with charcoal and concentrate on the composition without worrying about colour at this point. I may make several charcoal versions until I am happy with the composition.
When I am happy with the charcoal landscape, I create an oil pastel painting of the same landscape in colour. I do love colour and like to use lots of it. I also love my oil pastels and use them a bit like paint, pushing the pigment around with my fingers during the creation process to create a ‘painterly’ feel to the piece.
This original oil pastel painting would make a beautiful and unique gift for someone who loves Yorkshire, the Yorkshire Moors or Roseberry Topping. It could make a special birthday, wedding, Christmas or anniversary gift, or simply be a lovely piece to buy for yourself.
