Relax, unwind and create… In this relaxed needle felting workshop you will be taught the needle felting method to create your own felt landscape.

On the needle felting workshop

Bring along your favourite landscape* and learn how to needle felt it onto a piece of material (approx 18 x 18cm) to take home and frame.

This workshop will be an introduction to needle felting*, a dry felting technique.

I will be providing instructions at the beginning to get you started and offer individual assistance throughout, making it perfect for beginners. Much of the guidance will be one-on-one and tailored to the landscape you’ve chosen, ensuring you achieve the best results possible.

You can work comfortably sat down for the duration of the workshop. It’s a highly relaxing and mindful craft.

*Finish Time: Since each person is working on their own landscape at their own pace, it’s possible to finish a simpler landscape within 3 hours (1pm ish). However, if you prefer a more leisurely day, you can take your time, enjoy a half-hour lunch break from the cafe, and the workshop will conclude at 2pm.

Needle felting* is not sewing. Needle felting uses a special barbed needle and you stab pieces of wool fibres into the background material. It is easy to do and also very therapeutic (as long as you don’t stab your fingers!).

Images of landscapes to work from will be provided, but feel free to bring your own as well. Do you have a special landscape in mind, perhaps from a holiday, a local view or your childhood? Ideally, the image should mainly feature landscape elements (no buildings, animals, or people, although you can omit them if they are present). I’ll guide you step by step on how to transform it into felt. You’re welcome to bring as many images as you like, and I can help you choose the right one.

The felt workshop will be between 3-4hours long and includes:

  • All equipment
  • Merino wool
  • Material to work on approx 20 x 20cm
  • landscape images to use
  • a hot drink from the cafe on arrival*

You will need to bring:

  • layers of clothing you can take off / put on so you are a comfortable temperature
  • landscape images to use if you want to
  • money for more drinks and food if you wish to stay for lunch during the workshop

More workshops to expand your felting knowledge:

This workshop focuses on needle felting but I also teach a wet felting workshop. Both wet felting and needle felting are part of the wider felt-making process I use in my own practice.

In wet felting you build the base landscape by laying out and bonding wool fibres with water and soap, and in needle felting you use a barbed needle to add finer details and texture once the felt surface has formed. Many students find that once they’ve learned both approaches they can combine them to create richer, more expressive felt artworks.
