‘Dunes at Bamburgh’ Original Bamburgh Castle Artwork

MEDIUM: Original felt landscape artwork created using merino wool and mixed fibres
STYLE: Northumberland landscape art
LOCATION: Bamburgh Beach, Northumberland
SUBJECT: Bamburgh Castle viewed across the summer sand dunes

The Inspiration for Dunes at Bamburgh

As you walk over the sand dunes in August towards Bamburgh Beach, you can see these beautiful pink flowers growing amongst the grasses, with Bamburgh Castle providing a magnificent backdrop in the distance.

As a family, we love Northumberland and in particular Bamburgh Beach. We have visited many times over the years and it is one of those places we always enjoy returning to.

Bamburgh Castle is such an iconic Northumberland landmark that it can be seen for miles around and from many different locations along the coast.

I loved the combination of the soft summer dunes, delicate flowers and the dramatic castle in the distance, and wanted to capture this particular view in felt.

I hand-sewed lots of embroidery into the foreground to create the pink flowers growing amongst the dunes, adding extra texture and detail to the landscape.

A Little Poem to go with the Bamburgh Castle Artwork

Bamburgh Castle – From The Beach

The dunes around the castle flow,
Like wild flowers in the meadow.
So beautiful, elegant and strong,
Where once a battle was won.

The sea, the sand, the open air,
A place we go and deeply care.
We visit often, calm and free,
A place of joy beside the sea.

Adventure finds us on the beach,
Bodyboarding within our reach.
A family favourite, that’s for sure,
For memories that will endure.

About Bamburgh Castle and Bamburgh Beach

Bamburgh is one of the most beautiful coastal villages in Northumberland, famous for its wide sandy beach and spectacular castle overlooking the North Sea.

Bamburgh Castle stands dramatically on a rocky outcrop above the coastline and is one of the most recognisable landmarks in Northumberland. The castle and surrounding landscape have a rich history stretching back many centuries.

The dunes around Bamburgh Beach are home to grasses and wildflowers which change with the seasons, creating a beautiful natural foreground to the castle and coastline.

For us, Bamburgh is also a place connected with family memories, beach days and adventures by the sea, making this view particularly special to me.

The Process

Drawing on my degree in Fine Art, I use merino wool in lots of different colours (as you would tubes of paint) and lay out the loose fibres of different coloured wool onto my base (as you would paint on canvas).

Once finished, the next stage is to make these loose fibres of wool stick together using the ‘wet felting’ technique to make the wool painting into a piece of felt. You do this by adding hot soapy water and friction. The hot water opens up the wool’s scales and the friction (rubbing and rolling) binds them together. During this process, the wool shrinks by approximately 15–20% and you end up with one piece of felt material.

Once the felted picture is dry, I needle felt into the piece to sharpen some of the details.

For this artwork, I also hand-sewed embroidery into the foreground to create the pink flowers, adding another layer of texture and detail.

The final felt artwork is attached to acid-free mountboard and professionally mounted and framed as shown.
