The Inspiration for My Bamburgh Castle Painting

We love Northumberland and have visited quite a few times over the last seven years. Bamburgh is a lovely place to visit and we always make time for a trip to the beach too.

As you leave Bamburgh heading towards Seahouses, there is a car park on the left. If you walk over the dunes towards the beach and look back towards Bamburgh Castle, you can see this beautiful view. During the summer months, there are lots of lovely wild flowers amongst the long grasses on the dunes.

It’s a beautiful and special view that now holds so many happy memories of our time spent here.

A Little Poem to go with the Bamburgh Castle Painting

The dunes around the castle flow,
Like wild flowers in the meadow.
So beautiful, elegant and strong,
Where once a battle was won.

The sea, the sand, the open air,
A place we go and deeply care.
We visit often, calm and free,
A place of joy beside the sea.

Adventure finds us on the beach,
Bodyboarding within our reach.
A family favourite, that’s for sure,
For memories that will endure.

The Process

Drawing on my Fine Art degree, I create a charcoal drawing of the landscape first. I love drawing with charcoal and concentrate on the composition before introducing colour.

When I am happy with the composition, I create an oil pastel painting of the same scene in colour. I love working with oil pastels and use them a bit like paint, pushing the pigment around with my fingers during the creation process to create a more painterly feel to the piece.
