SUBJECT Bass Rock viewed from Belhaven Beach beneath dramatic Scottish skies
It was August on a chilly, rainy and windy day in Scotland. We arrived at Belhaven Beach wrapped up warm. The sky was dark and moody as the rain softly pitter-pattered around us.
The beach was mostly deserted – just the occasional dog walker.
All we could hear was the sound of the waves, the gentle rain and our children laughing as they played in the sea, warm in their wetsuits.
The rain continued to fall softly, but we were on holiday, so we decided to simply live for the moment.
Live For The Moment
A Scottish summer family holiday,
Can be rainy, windy and grey.
We arrived at Belhaven Beach,
The sky was dark and moody that day.
Few others were there to be seen,
Just dog walkers, hardy and keen.
The soft pitter-patter sound of rain,
Quietly hushed as it hit the sand.
Our daughters, warm in wetsuits,
Playful on the beach and in the sea.
Laughing together, happy and free,
Living for the moment… as it should be.
Belhaven Beach is one of Scotland’s most beautiful sandy beaches, situated in East Lothian near the seaside town of Dunbar.
From the beach you can enjoy wonderful views across the Firth of Forth towards Bass Rock, a dramatic volcanic island famous for its spectacular seabird colonies, particularly its thousands of northern gannets.
Whatever the season, Belhaven Beach offers wide open skies, peaceful walks and breathtaking coastal scenery, making it a favourite destination for walkers, photographers and nature lovers alike.

Drawing on my degree in Fine Art, I use merino wool in lots of different colours (as you would tubes of paint) and lay out the loose fibres of different coloured wool onto my base (as you would paint on canvas).
Once finished the next stage is to make these loose fibres of wool stick together using the ‘wet felting’ technique to make the wool painting into a piece of felt. You do this by adding hot soapy water and friction. The hot water opens up the wools scales and the friction (rubbing/rolling) binds them together. During this process the wool shrinks by about 15-20% and you end up with one piece of felt material.
Once the felted picture is dry I needle felt into the piece to sharpen some of the details.
The final felt art is attached to a piece of acid free mount board and mounted as seen then posted out ready for you to take to a framer to choose the frame.
