Dunstanburgh Castle beach artwork inspired by the dramatic Northumberland coastline and the beautiful beach approach to Dunstanburgh Castle. This original felt landscape artwork by Yorkshire felt artist Janine Jacques captures the sweeping sandy beach, the castle in the distance and the feeling of being beside the sea. Created using layers of merino wool and mixed fibres, this unique piece celebrates the beauty of Northumberland coastal art.
MEDIUM: Original felt landscape artwork created using merino wool and mixed fibres
STYLE: Northumberland coastal art
LOCATION: Dunstanburgh Castle, Northumberland
SUBJECT: Dunstanburgh Castle viewed from the beach, with the Northumberland coastline stretching into the distance
It was a cool August day in Northumberland. We packed our lunch and drove to Dunstanburgh Golf Club, parking on the roadside just before you get to the club. These parking spaces are limited, so it is worth getting there as early as possible.
We made our way across the sand dunes and walked onto the beach. What an amazing view you get of Dunstanburgh Castle. It is an absolutely stunning beach and landscape, and it really does take your breath away and make you feel alive.
I walked barefoot along the shoreline towards the castle for a closer look. Other people were enjoying the beach, walking their dogs and flying kites, while my husband and children were bodyboarding in the sea, trying to catch the perfect wave.
It was one of those simple family days that stay with you. The combination of the beautiful Northumberland coastline, the castle, the sea and everyone enjoying the beach together made it a particularly special memory.
This artwork was inspired by that view and those memories, capturing not only how Dunstanburgh Castle looked from the beach, but also the feeling of being there.
Dunstanburgh Castle is one of the most dramatic historic landmarks on the Northumberland coast. The ruins stand on a rocky headland surrounded by beautiful coastal scenery, creating an impressive view from the beach.
The beach below Dunstanburgh Castle is a beautiful place to walk, with wide sandy shores, sand dunes and spectacular views towards the castle. On a clear day, the combination of sea, sand and ancient castle ruins makes it one of the most memorable landscapes on the Northumberland coast.
For our family, Dunstanburgh is also connected with happy memories of beach days, bodyboarding and exploring the coastline together.

Drawing on my degree in Fine Art, I use merino wool in lots of different colours (as you would tubes of paint) and lay out the loose fibres of different coloured wool onto my base (as you would paint on canvas).
Once finished, the next stage is to make these loose fibres of wool stick together using the ‘wet felting’ technique to make the wool painting into a piece of felt. You do this by adding hot soapy water and friction. The hot water opens up the wool’s scales and the friction (rubbing and rolling) binds them together. During this process, the wool shrinks by approximately 15-20% and you end up with one piece of felt material.
Once the felted picture is dry, I needle felt into the piece to sharpen some of the details.
The final felt artwork is attached to acid-free mountboard and mounted as shown, ready for you to take to a framer to choose the frame.
