We walked from the quaint village of Craster along the stunning coastline towards Dunstanburgh Castle in Northumberland.
It was August and warm, but the castle in the distance was shrouded in mist, like a blanket hushing it into silence. As we walked the coastal path, the yellow flowers in the meadow stood out brightly against the misty backdrop.
The salty air from the sea filled our lungs as we wandered along. Cows grazed happily in the meadow as we walked past, while the castle gradually emerged from the mist the closer we got.
I wanted to capture this peaceful and atmospheric walk in oil pastel, with the contrast between the soft mist, bright meadow flowers and imposing silhouette of Dunstanburgh Castle.
On a warm August day,
We walked the coastal way.
Cows grazing on the grass,
As we wandered quietly past.
Yellow flowers shone bright in the meadow,
Dunstanburgh Castle emerged into view.
Shrouded in mist, hushed into silence,
Growing clearer as we closed the distance.

Drawing on my Fine Art degree, I create a charcoal drawing of the landscape first. I love drawing with charcoal and concentrate on the composition without worrying about colour at this point. I may make several charcoal versions until I am happy with the composition.
When I am happy with the charcoal landscape, I create an oil pastel painting of the same landscape in colour. I do love colour and like to use lots of it. I also love my oil pastels and use them a bit like paint, pushing the pigment around with my fingers during the creation process to create a ‘painterly’ feel to the piece.
This original oil pastel painting would make a beautiful and unique gift for someone who loves Northumberland, the coast or Dunstanburgh Castle. It could make a special birthday, wedding, Christmas or anniversary gift, or simply be a lovely piece to buy for yourself.
