Malham Cove is one of our favourite Yorkshire family walks. We usually head to the top of Malham Cove first, then make our way down the hill to the road and wander into the woods to visit the stunning Janet’s Foss waterfall.
It’s a popular spot for bathers and paddlers, like myself! It’s lovely to have a little cooling dip in the crystal-clear water before carrying on into the village of Malham. I can highly recommend a visit.
In this small oil pastel painting, I wanted to capture the crystal clarity of the shallows. The water is so clear that you can see right through to the floor of the pool. I’ve tried to bring in the vibrant colours of summer, along with the sense of movement as the waterfall splashes into the pool below.
A walk that was so long,
From Malham village for the strong.
Up Malham Cove and across the cracks,
A picnic and some delicious snacks.
The waterfall looked divine,
The water did surely shine.
Refreshingly cool after the trek,
A paddle and splash upon the neck.
Janet’s Foss, a hidden treasure,
A place to enjoy at our leisure.
The water, crystal blue and clear,
A treasured memory, year by year.

Drawing on my degree in Fine Art, I create a charcoal and chalk drawing of the landscape first. I love drawing with charcoal and concentrate on the composition without worrying about colour at this stage. I may make several charcoal versions until I am happy with the composition.
When I am happy with the charcoal landscape, I create an oil pastel painting of the same landscape in colour. I do love colour and like to use lots of it. I also love my oil pastels and use them a bit like paint, pushing the pigment around with my fingers during the creation process to create a more painterly feel.
