The Inspiration for My Lindisfarne Castle Artwork

We love Northumberland and have visited many times over the years. We always make time for a little wander around Holy Island, enjoying its history, beautiful scenery and peaceful atmosphere.

This artwork captures the view approaching Lindisfarne Castle, where you can also see Bamburgh Castle in the distance on the mainland.

I loved the combination of the sea, the coastline, the two historic castles and the beautiful summer light. Northumberland has so many magical places, and this is certainly one of them.

For us, Holy Island is now connected with so many happy memories of family days out and exploring Northumberland together, which makes this view particularly special to me.

In this artwork, I have hand-sewn purple embroidery into the foreground, depicting plants found on the island, and added some material amongst the wool to create extra texture.

A Little Poem to go with the Lindisfarne Castle Artwork

Holy Island is the place to be,
At times it’s totally surrounded by sea.
The causeway timings are so vital,
To be sure of your arrival.

Sitting on the pebbled shore,
We watched the sun set, so pure.
Pinks and purples paint the sky,
As we stack the pebbles high.

Across the water, we can see
Two castles steeped in history.
Happy days with family adventures,
Northumberland, the land of splendour.

About Lindisfarne Castle and Holy Island

Holy Island, also known as Lindisfarne, is a historic island off the Northumberland coast, famous for its ancient priory, dramatic coastal scenery and the iconic Lindisfarne Castle.

Lindisfarne Castle sits on a rocky outcrop overlooking the sea and surrounding landscape. From the island there are wonderful views across the Northumberland coast, including towards Bamburgh Castle on the mainland.

The island is reached by a causeway which is covered by the sea at high tide, making it important for visitors to check the tide times before travelling.

Holy Island is a wonderful place to explore on foot, with beaches, coastal paths, historic buildings and beautiful views in every direction.

For me, it is also a place filled with family memories, making it a particularly special subject for my Northumberland artwork.

The Process

Drawing on my degree in Fine Art, I use merino wool in lots of different colours, much as you would use tubes of paint, and lay out the loose fibres of different coloured wool onto my base, as you would paint onto canvas.

Once finished, the next stage is to make these loose fibres of wool stick together using the wet felting technique to turn the wool painting into a piece of felt. This is done by adding hot soapy water and friction. The hot water opens up the wool’s scales and the friction, through rubbing and rolling, binds them together. During this process, the wool shrinks by approximately 15–20%, leaving one piece of felt material.

Once the felted picture is dry, I needle felt into the piece to sharpen some of the details.

The final felt artwork is attached to acid-free mountboard and mounted as shown, ready for you to take to a framer to choose the frame.
