We love Northumberland and have visited many times over the years. We always make time for a little wander around Holy Island, enjoying its history, scenery and peaceful atmosphere.
On our last visit, we decided to get tickets to go inside Lindisfarne Castle. It is a fascinating place to explore, full of history, with fantastic views across the island.
We also discovered that there was a walled garden on the island, apparently a place often missed by visitors, including us on our previous visits! So this time we made sure to explore the garden too.
We were lucky enough to visit during the summer holidays when the flowers were in full bloom, filling the garden with wonderful colour. This artwork captures the view from inside the walled garden, looking towards Lindisfarne Castle on the hill.
In this artwork, I have hand-sewn embroidery into the foreground to create a tapestry of different flowers, adding texture and detail to the felt landscape.
It was such an inspirational view that I felt I had to capture it in felt, preserving the memory of this beautiful scene and another lovely visit to Holy Island.
Holy Island is the place to be,
At times it’s totally surrounded by sea.
The causeway timings are so vital,
To be sure of your arrival.
Lindisfarne Castle, a Tudor fort,
With views that simply can’t be bought.
Gertrude Jekyll’s walled garden, not to be missed,
A vibrant place of calm and bliss.
Summer blooms as colourful as can be,
Flowers with such richness and variety.
A feast for the eyes, with scents in the air,
A garden that is beyond compare.

What is a giclée print?
Pronounced “zhee-clay”, giclée is the French word meaning “to spray”. Giclée printing is a high-quality fine art printing process using archival pigmented inks to produce excellent detail and rich colours, with prints designed to last for many years.

Drawing on my Fine Art degree, I create my felt landscapes using wool as a painter would use oils or watercolours. Layers of coloured merino wool fibres are carefully arranged to build the landscape before being transformed into felt using the traditional wet felting technique of hot soapy water, rolling and friction.
During felting, the wool naturally shrinks by around 15–20%, creating a single piece of felt. Once dry, I use needle felting to refine details and add texture before the artwork is professionally scanned for printing.
