MEDIUM: Original felt landscape artwork created using merino wool and mixed fibres
STYLE: Northumberland landscape art
LOCATION: Lindisfarne Walled Garden, Holy Island, Northumberland
SUBJECT: The colourful walled garden with Lindisfarne Castle in the distance
We love Northumberland and have visited many times over the years. We always make time for a little wander around Holy Island, enjoying its history, scenery and peaceful atmosphere.
On our last visit, we decided to get tickets to go inside Lindisfarne Castle. It’s a fascinating place to explore, full of history, with fantastic views across the island.
We also discovered that there was a walled garden on the island – apparently a place often missed by visitors, including us on our previous visits! So this time we made sure to explore the garden too.
This artwork captures the view from inside the walled garden, looking towards Lindisfarne Castle on the hill. We were lucky enough to visit when the summer flowers were in full bloom, filling the garden with wonderful colour.
It was such an inspirational view that I felt I had to capture it in felt, preserving the memory of this beautiful scene and another lovely visit to Holy Island.
Holy Island is the place to be,
At times it’s totally surrounded by sea.
The causeway timings are so vital,
To be sure of your arrival.
Lindisfarne Castle, a Tudor fort,
With views that simply can’t be bought.
Gertrude Jekyll’s walled garden, not to be missed,
A vibrant place of calm and bliss.
Summer blooms as colourful as can be,
Flowers with such richness and variety.
A feast for the eyes, with scents in the air,
A garden that is beyond compare.
Holy Island, also known as Lindisfarne, is a historic island off the Northumberland coast, famous for its ancient priory, dramatic coastal landscape and the iconic Lindisfarne Castle.
The island is reached by a causeway which is covered by the sea at high tide, making it important for visitors to check the tide times before travelling.
Lindisfarne Walled Garden was created in the early twentieth century by the famous garden designer Gertrude Jekyll. Originally created as a kitchen garden, it is now a beautiful and colourful garden filled with flowers and plants.
Title: Lindisfarne Walled Garden
MEDIUM: Original felt landscape artwork
MATERIALS: Merino wool and mixed fibres
PRESENTATION: Professionally framed using acid-free double-thickness mountboard within a white wooden frame fitted with museum-quality glass (80% anti-reflective).
FRAMED SIZE: Approximately 50cm (H) × 52cm (W)
Each felt artwork is individually handmade, making every piece completely unique.
Colours and tones may vary slightly from those shown on screen.
Drawing on my degree in Fine Art, I use merino wool in lots of different colours (as you would tubes of paint) and lay out the loose fibres of different coloured wool onto my base (as you would paint on canvas).
Once finished, the next stage is to make these loose fibres of wool stick together using the ‘wet felting’ technique to make the wool painting into a piece of felt. You do this by adding hot soapy water and friction. The hot water opens up the wool’s scales and the friction (rubbing and rolling) binds them together. During this process, the wool shrinks by approximately 15–20% and you end up with one piece of felt material.
Once the felted picture is dry, I needle felt into the piece to sharpen some of the details.
The final felt artwork is attached to acid-free mountboard and professionally mounted and framed as shown.
