Created in vibrant oil pastels, this original landscape celebrates the colourful purple thistles that brighten the meadows beneath one of North Yorkshire’s most iconic limestone landmarks. SUBJECT: Malham Cove and Yorkshire wildflower landscape
This artwork was inspired by a summer walk through the Yorkshire Dales. Setting off from the picturesque village of Malham, we listened to the gentle stream as we walked towards the towering limestone cliffs of Malham Cove.
While the dramatic cliffs are impossible to ignore, the vibrant purple thistles scattered through the meadows really gave the landscape a pop of colour. The rich purple stood out beautifully against the fresh green grass and pale limestone, creating a scene full of contrast and life.
Using oil pastels, I wanted to capture both the grandeur of Malham Cove and the often-overlooked beauty of the wildflowers that line the approach. Sometimes it’s the little details that make a landscape truly memorable.
Malham Cove is a majestic view,
You’d know if you’ve been there too.
The curved rock face, the trickling stream,
The kind of view straight from a dream.
A magical place in the heart of Yorkshire,
A beauty spot that’s such a corker.
Ascend the mount – it’s a long slog,
But at the summit, you feel top dog.
This is the view to beat,
With cracked rocks beneath your feet.
Breathtaking beauty, the calm, the air…
Take it all in from way up there.
Release the tension, breath by breath.
Stretch your eyes out towards the horizon.
You’re now truly alive and free,
In the place where you want to be.

Drawing on my degree in Fine Art, I create a charcoal and chalk drawing of the landscape first, or sometimes a collage using photographs I have taken. I love drawing with charcoal and concentrate on the composition before introducing colour.
When I am happy with the composition, I create an oil pastel painting of the same landscape in colour. I do love colour and like to use lots of it. I also love my oil pastels and use them a bit like paint, pushing the pigment around with my fingers during the creation process to create a ‘painterly’ feel to the piece.
