Malham Cove View painting is of the beautiful Yorkshire countryside depicting a view from the top of Malham Cove. An original oil pastel painting by Yorkshire landscape artist Janine Jacques.

“View From Malham Cove” oil pastel painting

As we walked from the village to Malham Cove we could hear the sound of the stream gently trickling along side us as Malham Cove got closer and closer.

Once at Malham Cove we took the steps to the top which is where you can see this beautiful view of Malham Cove and the distant fields.

From here we went across the huge cracked stones at the top and down to Janets Foss waterfall. After a little paddle to cool down and rest we walked back to the village for tea and cake. It’s a lovely family day out with the kids.

The Process

Drawing on my degree in Fine Art, I create a charcoal and chalk drawing of the landscape first. I love drawing with charcoal and concentrate on the composition without worrying about the colour at this point. I may make several charcoal versions until I am happy with the composition.

When I am happy with the charcoal landscape I create an oil pastel painting of the same landscape in colour. I do love colour and like to use lots of it. I also love my oil pastels and use them a bit like paint, I can push the pigment around with my fingers during the creation process to create a ‘painterly’ feel to the piece.
