The Inspiration for My Robin Hood’s Bay Art Print

We arrived in Robin Hood’s Bay on a not-so-sunny August day. Fearing the worst for the weather that day, it soon picked up. We felt so lucky to have a lovely day in such a beautiful place.

We had a lovely family day out and found the beach to be a special place to relax, walk and have a little paddle in the cool shallows.

We stood on the shore looking out to sea and listened to the sounds of the waves crashing on the shore, it gave us all a feeling of calm.

It was one of those simple family days that stay in your memory, enjoying the beach, being together and taking time to appreciate the beauty of the Yorkshire coast. This experience inspired me to create this original felt landscape artwork.

A Little Poem to go with the Robin Hoods Bay Art Print

Robin Hood’s Bay

A family day out at the beach.
A Yorkshire gem within our reach,
A special place to walk and paddle,
Kicking the water in the shallows.

On the shore we stood and stare,
Out to sea with the breeze in our hair.
Waves rolling gently on the sand,
The feeling of calm as they land.

We stood in wonder at the view,
A few little boats were bobbing too.
Each breath, medicine to our souls,
A rest for the mind to behold.

The Process

Drawing on my degree in Fine Art, I use wool in lots of different colours, much as you would use tubes of paint, and lay out the loose fibres of different coloured wool onto my base, as you would paint onto canvas.

Once finished, the next stage is to make these loose fibres of wool stick together using the wet felting technique to turn the wool painting into a piece of felt. This is done by adding hot soapy water and friction. The hot water opens up the wool’s scales and the friction, through rubbing and rolling, binds them together. During this process the wool shrinks by about 15–20%, leaving one piece of felt material.

Once the felted picture is dry, I needle felt into the piece to sharpen some of the details.
