This North Yorkshire Moors painting was inspired by the view from Captain Cook’s Monument of the iconic Roseberry Topping, with all the heather in bloom. Heather usually blooms from mid-July to mid-September, and we were lucky enough to see this amazing sight.
On the day we visited, we climbed up to Captain Cook’s Monument and had a lovely family picnic at the top, with stunning panoramic views all around. This is such a beautiful and special place.
Hiking up to the peak,
A monumental sight to seek.
A picnic sheltered from the gust,
The view of Roseberry is a must.
Hot and windy, a summer’s day,
This scene in my mind will always stay.
Panoramic views from way up there,
A majestic place, I do declare.
Roseberry Topping, a small mountain,
A Yorkshire beauty to enlighten.
Can be seen from miles away,
An iconic scene that’s here to stay.

Drawing on my Fine Art degree, I create a charcoal drawing of the landscape first. I love drawing with charcoal and concentrate on the composition before introducing colour.
When I am happy with the composition, I create an oil pastel painting of the same scene in colour. I love working with oil pastels and use them a bit like paint, pushing the pigment around with my fingers during the creation process to create a more painterly feel to the piece.
