Roseberry Topping art, North Yorks Moors, charcoal drawing, 19x19cm

Roseberry Topping art, North York Moors, North Yorkshire, Charcoal and chalk drawing.

Original Charcoal Drawing “Newton Under Roseberry” Masham, Yorkshire.

Inspiration

We decided to visit Roseberry Topping and parked on the roadside at Newton Under Roseberry. As we walked towards The National Trust car park we looked across to Roseberry Topping and saw this view. From the National Trust car park we made our way up to the top of Roseberry Topping. My husbands parents live nearby and he had climbed it as a child many times so it had lovely childhood memories for him. And now climbing it with his own children.

It was a tough and thirsty climb up to the top and we were well ready for our picnic. We sat on the top of Roseberry Topping and looked out over the rolling hills of Yorkshire. A spectacular view and well worth the climb up.

The Process:-

Drawing on my degree in Fine Art painting and drawing, I create a charcoal drawing first, then a colourful oil pastel painting of the same scene. I then use both of these to create the felt landscape  out of wool and other materials. I find creating the scene in oil pastel first helps to give my felt landscapes more of a painterly feel.
