We visited Roseberry Topping and parked at Newton under Roseberry. As we walked towards the National Trust car park, we looked across the fields and saw this beautiful view of one of Yorkshire’s most recognisable landmarks.
We then made our way up to the top of Roseberry Topping. My husband’s parents live nearby and he had climbed it many times as a child, so it held lovely childhood memories for him. Now he was able to climb it again with his own children, creating new family memories. He did comment that the paths were much better now!
It was a tough and thirsty climb to the summit on a hot summer’s day, and by the time we reached the top we were ready for our picnic. Sitting on Roseberry Topping, looking out over the rolling hills of North Yorkshire, was truly a spectacular experience and well worth the climb.
This special moment inspired me to create this original Roseberry Topping artwork, capturing not only how the landscape looks, but also the feeling of being there.
Hiking up to the peak,
A monumental sight to seek.
A picnic sheltered from the gust,
The view of Roseberry Topping’s a must.

This scene in my mind will always stay.

Roseberry Topping rises dramatically above the surrounding landscape on the edge of the North York Moors.
Its unique shape was formed through geological changes and a landslip in the nineteenth century, creating the distinctive profile that has made it one of Yorkshire’s most loved landmarks.
Today, Roseberry Topping is a favourite destination for walkers, families and photographers, rewarding visitors who make the climb with wonderful panoramic views across the North Yorkshire countryside.
Nearby Captain Cook’s Monument also offers spectacular views across the area, with Roseberry Topping remaining one of the most recognisable features of the Yorkshire landscape.

The Process
Drawing on my degree in Fine Art, I use merino wool in lots of different colours (as you would tubes of paint) and lay out the loose fibres of different coloured wool onto my base (as you would paint on canvas).
Once finished the next stage is to make these loose fibres of wool stick together using the ‘wet felting’ technique to make the wool painting into a piece of felt. You do this by adding hot soapy water and friction. The hot water opens up the wools scales and the friction (rubbing/rolling) binds them together. During this process the wool shrinks by about 15-20% and you end up with one piece of felt material.
Once the felted picture is dry I needle felt into the piece to sharpen some of the details.
The final felt art is attached to a piece of acid free mount board and mounted and framed as seen.
