We love Northumberland and have visited many times in recent years. We always make time for a little wander around Holy Island.
On our last visit, we decided to get tickets to go inside Lindisfarne Castle. It’s a great place to visit, full of history and with fantastic views all around the island.
We also discovered that there is a walled garden on the island – apparently a place often missed by visitors, including us on previous visits! So this time we made sure to explore the garden too.
This artwork captures the view from inside the walled garden looking out towards Lindisfarne Castle on the hill. We were so lucky to visit when the summer flowers were in full bloom, filling the garden with wonderful colour.
It was such an inspirational view that I felt I had to capture it in oil pastel, preserving the memory of this beautiful scene and another lovely visit to Holy Island.
Holy Island is the place to be,
At times it’s totally surrounded by sea.
The causeway timings are so vital,
To be sure of your arrival.
Lindisfarne Castle, a Tudor fort,
With views that simply can’t be bought.
Gertrude Jekyll’s walled garden, not to be missed,
A vibrant place of calm and bliss.
Summer blooms as colourful as can be,
Flowers with such richness and variety.
A feast for the eyes, with scents in the air,
A garden that is beyond compare.

Drawing on my Fine Art degree, I create a charcoal drawing of the landscape first. I love drawing with charcoal and concentrate on the composition before introducing colour.
When I am happy with the composition, I create an oil pastel painting of the same scene in colour. I love working with oil pastels and use them a bit like paint, pushing the pigment around with my fingers during the creation process to create a more painterly feel to the piece.
