Yorkshire Sheep Art Print – “You’re Not My Boss”  Burnsall, North Yorkshire
Fine art giclée print from an original felt landscape by Yorkshire artist Janine Jacques.

About this Yorkshire Sheep Art Print

This artwork celebrates Yorkshire’s rich sheep farming heritage and the timeless beauty of the Yorkshire Dales. It was originally created for an exhibition at Leeds Industrial Museum, in association with the International Felt Makers Association (Region 10), exploring the impact of industrialisation on both the environment and rural life.

It captures a fleeting moment in the Yorkshire countryside, where a determined ewe and a traditional collie sheepdog are locked in a stubborn standoff.

Where possible, I like to include my four childhood pet sheep in my artwork. This piece was inspired by a photograph I took during my GCSE photography course in the 1990s. I have reimagined the original scene by placing my four pet sheep into the landscape, set against the picturesque countryside near Burnsall.

I also replaced my dad’s mixed-breed farm dog from the original photograph with my friend’s collie, reflecting the traditional working sheepdogs that have long been part of Yorkshire’s sheep farming heritage.

This artwork was also featured in the Yorkshire Post.

Poem: You’re Not My Boss

Burnsall, a Yorkshire beauty spot,
With rolling hills of green.
Where sheep graze freely in the fields,
A peaceful, timeless scene.

So many walks for all to enjoy,
With views to restore your soul.
De-stress with every step,
As nature makes you whole.

One ewe stomps with a stubborn glare,
She stamps her feet and does declare,
“You’re not my boss!” She lowers her head,
The sheepdog admits defeat instead.

Sheep, such gentle creatures,
So naturally playful and curious.
A perfect countryside feature,
For a landscape so glorious.

The Process:-

Drawing on my Fine Art degree, I create my felt landscapes using wool as a painter would use oils or watercolours. Layers of coloured merino wool fibres are carefully arranged to build the landscape before being transformed into felt using the traditional wet felting technique of hot soapy water, rolling and friction.

During felting, the wool naturally shrinks by around 15-20%, creating a single piece of fabric. Once dry, I use needle felting to refine details and add texture before the artwork is professionally scanned for printing.
