Winter has a wonderful way of transforming the Yorkshire countryside. Snow softens the landscape, creating a quiet stillness where every tree, wall and field seems wrapped in calm.
Although this scene was inspired by Yorkshire in winter, the sheep make this artwork especially meaningful to me.
Whenever I walk through the countryside and discover a landscape that inspires me, I often imagine my own little flock standing within it. Before leaving, I take a photograph of the view, knowing that when I return to my studio I can begin creating a new felt landscape.
Rather than copying the scene exactly, I often replace the sheep with four very familiar faces—my childhood pets. They have become a small signature within many of my landscapes, allowing treasured memories to live on through my artwork.
When I’m walking in the open air,
And I see a landscape I wish to share,
With lovely sheep who stop and stare,
I take a quick pic while I am there.
Back home, while creating the art,
I swap in my sheep to play the part.
My childhood flock, my faithful four,
To honour the ones I did adore.
A nostalgic memory from the past,
A little nod to my pets – now recast.
My little flock of four,
Alive in the landscape once more.

UNFRAMED The final felt landscape painting is attached to a piece of acid free mount board and mounted with an extra thick mount ready for you to take to a framer to choose the frame.

I can arrange for the artwork to be framed (UK only) and posted out to you. Please choose from the two options available. Framing times will vary dependig on how busy my framer is at the time.
Drawing on my degree in Fine Art, I use merino wool in lots of different colours (as you would tubes of paint) and lay out the loose fibres of different coloured wool onto my base (as you would paint on canvas).
Once finished the next stage is to make these loose fibres of wool stick together using the ‘wet felting’ technique to make the wool painting into a piece of felt. You do this by adding hot soapy water and friction. The hot water opens up the wools scales and the friction (rubbing/rolling) binds them together. During this process the wool shrinks by about 15-20% and you end up with one piece of felt material.
Once the felted picture is dry I needle felt into the piece to sharpen some of the details.
The final felt art is attached to a piece of acid free mount board and mounted as seen then posted out ready for you to take to a framer to choose the frame.
