Fox and Crow artwork – an original felt landscape artwork by Yorkshire felt artist Janine Jacques. Featuring a beautiful fox sitting in an autumn woodland looking up at a crow perched on a branch, this unique wildlife artwork is inspired by the British countryside and the changing colours of autumn.
MEDIUM: Original felt landscape artwork using merino wool, material and mixed fibres
STYLE: Yorkshire felt landscape art / British wildlife art
LOCATION: Yorkshire woodland
SUBJECT: Fox and crow artwork / autumn woodland
The Fox and Crow was inspired by a stunning photograph of a fox by photographer Kelli Lewis Sutherland, which I combined with an autumn woodland landscape I had previously photographed near my home in Yorkshire.
I loved the idea of bringing the two images together to create a little woodland story, the watchful fox looking up towards the crow perched high on a branch, surrounded by the rich colours of autumn.
With its warm autumn colours and watchful woodland visitors, The Fox and Crow captures the quiet magic of the British countryside. The layers of felt create a beautiful texture throughout the woodland, while the fox and crow become the characters within the scene.
The Fox And Crow
Foxy foxy cunning and sly
Spoke to the crow way up high
Although the words were dressed in cheer,
Truly they were not sincere.
The crow did laugh
At fox’s words
But to his surprise
The crow dropped his prize.
The fox then feasted,
His head held low,
And off he slipped,
Through the autumn glow.

Each felt artwork is individually handmade, making every piece completely unique.
Please note: colours may vary slightly due to photography and screen differences.
Drawing on my Fine Art degree, I create my felt artwork using merino wool and other fibres, layering coloured wool in much the same way a painter uses brushstrokes and paint.
Once the design is complete, the loose fibres are transformed into felt using the traditional wet felting process. Hot soapy water and friction open the tiny scales on the wool fibres, allowing them to bind together into one strong piece of felt. During this process, the artwork naturally shrinks by around 15–20%.
When the felt has dried, I use needle felting techniques to refine details and add definition before mounting the finished artwork onto acid-free mount board and framing it.
