Autumn Forest Deer artwork, an original felt painting by Yorkshire felt artist Janine Jacques, inspired by a beautiful woodland walk near Hazelwood Castle in Yorkshire. This unique felt landscape artwork captures the rich colours of autumn, with a deer quietly hidden amongst the trees and fallen leaves.
MEDIUM: Original felt landscape artwork using merino wool and mixed fibres
STYLE: Yorkshire felt landscape art
LOCATION: Yorkshire woodland, near Hazelwood Castle
SUBJECT: Autumn woodland deer art / Yorkshire countryside
We walked from home to Hazelwood Castle, which is one of our favourite local walks.
To get there, we pass through this beautiful woodland. The tall trees provided a lovely autumnal scene, with the forest floor carpeted with a rich array of fallen leaves in shades of red, orange and gold. Rays of sunlight danced through the trees, casting long, dappled shadows on the forest floor.
A deer ahead of us was camouflaged by the autumn colours, silently waiting. If she doesn’t make a sound, maybe we won’t see her.
We saw lots of deer that day, bouncing through the forest. It’s always such a special and rare moment to see them.
I wrote a short poem to reflect the scene, with a little poetic licence, as the dog wasn’t actually there!
Little autumn deer,
Has lots to fear.
A dog roaming free…
Quick, hide behind a tree!
The deer has been seen,
Keeping her demeanour serene.
The deer has been smelt,
And now she must pelt.
Through woodland she is quick,
Through forest branches, dense and thick.
Safe once more beneath the trees,
Hidden amongst the autumn leaves.
This original felt landscape artwork was inspired by a real walk through the woodland near my home in Yorkshire. The combination of autumn leaves, tall trees, dappled sunlight and the fleeting sight of deer made it a particularly memorable walk.
I love capturing these little moments from the Yorkshire countryside in felt. Using layers of coloured wool allows me to build up the landscape in much the same way as a painter builds up a picture with layers of paint, creating texture as well as colour.

Each felt artwork is individually handmade, making every piece completely unique.
Drawing on my degree in Fine Art, I use merino wool in lots of different colours (as you would tubes of paint) and lay out the loose fibres of different coloured wool onto my base (as you would paint on canvas).
Once finished, the next stage is to make these loose fibres of wool stick together using the ‘wet felting’ technique to make the wool painting into a piece of felt. You do this by adding hot soapy water and friction. The hot water opens up the wool’s scales and the friction (rubbing and rolling) binds them together. During this process the wool shrinks by about 15–20% and you end up with one piece of felt material.
Once the felted picture is dry, I needle felt into the piece to sharpen some of the details.
The final felt artwork is mounted in a double-thickness acid-free mount and framed in a white wooden frame with museum glass.
