This artwork was inspired by one of my favourite walks in the Yorkshire Dales. We began our journey in the picturesque village of Malham before following the gentle stream towards the impressive Malham Cove.
After climbing the famous limestone steps to the top of the cove, we paused to enjoy a picnic while taking in the spectacular panoramic views across the surrounding countryside. Crossing the distinctive limestone pavement, well known as a filming location in a popular wizarding film, we continued our walk through the woodland to discover the hidden beauty of Janet’s Foss.
The gentle waterfall, framed by moss-covered rocks and lush greenery, was a magical sight. On such a warm day, we couldn’t resist paddling in the cool water, a welcome chance to rest tired feet and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
It was this memorable walk that inspired me to create this original felt landscape, capturing the tranquillity and natural beauty of one of Yorkshire’s hidden gems.

A walk that was so long,
From Malham village for the strong.
Up Malham Cove and across the cracks,
A picnic and some delicious snacks.
The waterfall looked divine,
The water did surely shine.
Refreshingly cool after the trek,
A paddle and splash upon the neck.
Janet’s Foss, a hidden treasure,
A place to enjoy at our leisure.
The water, crystal blue and clear,
A treasured memory, year by year.

The artwork is professionally framed using acid-free double-thickness mountboard within a white wooden frame fitted with museum-quality anti-reflective glass (approximately 80% anti-reflective).

The Process
Drawing on my degree in Fine Art, I use merino wool in lots of different colours (as you would tubes of paint) and lay out the loose fibres of different coloured wool onto my base (as you would paint on canvas).
Once finished the next stage is to make these loose fibres of wool stick together using the ‘wet felting’ technique to make the wool painting into a piece of felt. You do this by adding hot soapy water and friction. The hot water opens up the wools scales and the friction (rubbing/rolling) binds them together. During this process the wool shrinks by about 15-20% and you end up with one piece of felt material.
Once the felted picture is dry I needle felt into the piece to sharpen some of the details.
The final felt art is attached to a piece of acid free mount board and mounted as seen then posted out ready for you to take to a framer to choose the frame.
