This artwork was inspired by one of my favourite walks through the Yorkshire Dales.
Beginning in the picturesque village of Malham, we followed the stream towards the impressive limestone cliffs of Malham Cove. As we drew nearer, the sheer scale of the cove became more and more breathtaking.
After climbing the famous stone steps to the summit, we were rewarded with one of the finest panoramic views in Yorkshire. Looking out across the rolling countryside, it felt like the perfect place to pause for a picnic and simply appreciate the landscape.
Crossing the distinctive limestone pavement, famously featured in a popular wizarding film, we continued our walk through the woodland to Janet’s Foss before making our way back to Malham village.
It was this unforgettable day that inspired me to create View from Malham Cove, capturing not just the scenery, but the feeling of standing high above the Yorkshire Dales with nothing but fresh air, wide-open views and nature all around.
Malham Cove is a majestic view,
You’d know if you’ve been there too.
The curved rock face, the trickling stream,
The kind of view straight from a dream.
A magical place in the heart of Yorkshire,
A beauty spot that’s such a corker.
Ascend the mount – it’s a long slog,
But at the summit, you feel top dog.
This is the view to beat,
With cracked rocks beneath your feet.
Breathtaking beauty, the calm, the air…
Take it all in from way up there.
Release the tension, breath by breath.
Stretch your eyes out towards the horizon.
You’re now truly alive and free,
In the place where you want to be.

Professionally framed using acid-free double-thickness mountboard within a white wooden frame fitted with museum-quality anti-reflective glass.

Drawing on my degree in Fine Art, I use merino wool in lots of different colours (as you would tubes of paint) and lay out the loose fibres of different coloured wool onto my base (as you would paint on canvas).
Once finished the next stage is to make these loose fibres of wool stick together using the ‘wet felting’ technique to make the wool painting into a piece of felt. You do this by adding hot soapy water and friction. The hot water opens up the wools scales and the friction (rubbing/rolling) binds them together. During this process the wool shrinks by about 15-20% and you end up with one piece of felt material.
Once the felted picture is dry I needle felt into the piece to sharpen some of the details.
The final felt art is attached to a piece of acid free mount board and mounted and framed as seen.
